To become an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer in India, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Educational qualifications: Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from a recognized university in India or abroad.
- Age limits: Candidates must be at least 21 years old and not more than 32 years old on the first day of the month in which the examination is held. There are age relaxation rules for certain categories of candidates.
- Nationality: Candidates must be a citizen of India.
- Physical fitness: Candidates must be physically fit and meet the prescribed medical standards.
- Other requirements: Candidates must also be of good character and not have any criminal convictions.
To become an IAS officer, candidates must also pass the competitive Civil Services Examination, which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) annually.
This exam consists of a preliminary examination, main examination, and interview.
The preliminary examination consists of two papers: General Studies and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Candidates who pass the preliminary examination are eligible to appear for the main examination, which consists of nine papers, including two qualifying papers and seven papers for the merit list.
Candidates who pass the main examination are then invited for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection process.
